1790 Antique Print; The Least Horned Owl by Nodder & Shaw

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) attractive antique print of The Least Horned Owl. Offered with early hand colour. Described by Shaw " The bird here represented in its natural size, is the least species of Owl yet known; it is of that division of the genus which contains the species commonly called Horned Owls, or such as have a tuft of feathers Handing up on each side of the forehead. It is a native of Siberia, and is found in several parts of Russia. It is a species of uncommon elegance of plumage." DATE PRINTED: 1790, dated on the print. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 11.5 x 19.5 cm (4.5 x 7.75 inches) plus margins with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: George Shaw (1751-1813) collaborated with Frederick Nodder (1770-1800), who was responsible for the distinctive illustrations in the Naturalist’s Miscellany. The hand colored plates in this work are prized by collectors for their true to life qualities and are becoming increasingly harder to find as the supply vanishes.
