Description: Here is an ORIGINAL "Pay Voucher" paid on June 14th, 1865 to Major John D. Simpson. The pay period here was: April 27th,1865 - to - May 31st of 1865 and assigned in Wheeling, WV. With this payment assignment, he was given a "Leave of Absence" on June 5th, 1865 while being assigned with the Army of Shenandoah. As seen in image # 9. Union Major John D. Simpson was assigned TWO PRIVATE SERVANTS to assist in his daily needs (see image # 12). His "Pay" term was 1 months and 4 days and was his personal payment for his military service was $79.33. His (2) private servants (not soldiers) were paid $16.00 each, PLUS their $6.50 each for their clothing. Total payment here (for all their services) is $226.26. On 4/23/1861 he mustered into the 10th Indiana Infantry, Co. "E". On 8/6/1861 he "Mustered Out" at Indianapolis, IN. Then on 9/18/1861 he mustered into the "Field & Staff" of the 10th IND. Infantry and then mustered out on 12/19/1864. ~~~~~~ On 4/27/1865 he was commissioned into the "Field & Staff" of the 154th IND Infantry and then mustered out on 8/04/1865 in Winchester, WV. He was listed as: POW on 9/20/1863 in Chickamauga, GA and then he escaped the Confederate "LIBBY PRISON" of Richmond, VA on 2/9/1864 (then re-captured).
