Description: All Philadelphia trade dollars are tough to locate with chop marks, although the 1877-P turns up with some regularity. Scarce with PCGS "straight" numeric grades with chop marks, this example is heavily circulated and bears what looks like a "祀" or "si" chop on the reverse (today's meaning is "sacrifice") along with at least two other chops slightly overlapping. Given the proximity of Carson City and San Francisco mints to the Pacific and far East, fewer Philadelphia minted trade dollars reached overseas ports and those that did survive in small number today. Scholars have noted that many Philadelphia trade dollars reached the far East by way of steamships from the US first to London and from London to Asia.
