1942 ALLIED Occupied "FRENCH" ALGERIA "5 Francs" Note AFTER The "TORCH" INVASION

Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1942 ALLIED Occupied "FRENCH" ALGERIA "5 Francs" Note AFTER The "TORCH" INVASION Description This is a nice World War II veteran, "Cinq" or Five Francs note from Allied occupied "French" Algeria in North Africa. Dated November 16, 1942 during World War II, these were issued after the defeat of the "Vichy French" forces and the country was freed by the British and Americans.   When the German blitzkrieg invaded mainland France in 1940, the defeated French government was allowed to continue as the puppet "Vichy Government" and French colonial Algeria came under its control. Vichy issued notes for Algeria until "Operation Torch", the November 8, 1942 invasion of North Africa by the United States and Great Britain.   The Vichy forces in Africa were quickly defeated, the "Free French" returned, and after the period of military occupation took over the governance of the colony once again. It is one of the ironies of history that the first Americans to die in combat in Europe during World War II were fighting the French.   "Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (General Issues 1368-1960) by Albert Pick. #91. Face: Green. • Bilingual. • Woman at right.   Back: 604 • Y.496 • 16-11-1942 • Bilingual.   The Note: A still crispy veteran, it saw light use during and possibly after the war. It has been folded vertically, not horizontally and has some light soiling, but has no edge or body tears and no pinholes. The note will be sent in new currency holder that protects it.
