It is common in the wild and it is widely cultivated because it is a durable native plant that is easy to grow and it has beautiful, glossy leaves and abundant fruits. The leaves are held upright on the stems. It is often grown as a hedge and occasionally as a small specimen tree. It occurs in wetlands and along the coast.
