Description: ORIGINAL ANTIQUE CURRIER 'AMERICAN FOREST SCENE - SUGAR MAPLING' LARGE FOLIO LITHOGRAPH after AF TAIT This is just a great original piece. I have been doing a lot of research on this print and trying to really figure it out. First off, this is one of the finest Currier print every created. Considered the New Best 50, it is number 6 on that list. It is one of the most classic views of New England with a large group out in the woods getting ready to help boil the sap. This print was originally printed in 1856. Based on the paper, I am fairly confident this is not one of those. It is a thicker paper and dates to a later date. According to my research, this image was printed again by the firm in the 1880s. I believe this is one of those examples. Still an original Currier but not the first printing. To answer some questions, preemptively, it absolutely is a stone lithograph and NOT an offset. The original coloring is also gum arabic and watercolor. Not printed coloring. This is a large folio with the image measuring 18 1/2 x 26 3/4 inches on sheet measuring 23 x 29 1/2 inches. Image is clean and a very good impression. Wonderful early coloring that really looks stunning. It has some tears that need repairing. Along the left margin there are 3 tears from the edge measuring about 7, 3, and 4 inches and go into the image. A few other small edge tears in the margin as well but not into the image. There is also a 7 inch tear in from the right margin. A few other small tears along the top and bottom margins that dont head into the image. There is no real loss along the tears so the images just need to be repaired. On the back is early repairs done with non archival scotch and other tapes. I also think it could use a cleaning but I would be hesitant to do it as the coloring is so strong. Print is in a complimentary wood frame and ready for hanging. Frame measures 25 1/2 x 32 inches.
