Description: Antique Scottish Gouache Watercolor Painting Robert Frier 19th Century A large gouache and watercolor painting by Robert Frier, RSA 1855-1912, Scotland, The painting depicts a woman knitting a sock under a lovely bower, painted around 1880 when Frier was living at the address listed on the label. The detail work on this is amazing! It is signed in the lower left corner Rob. Frier. It measures 39" high by 26 1/4" wide including the frame. Actual image size is 34" high by 21 3/4" wide. In excellent condition with some minor losses to the gesso on the frame. The painting is all original, including the frame, glass, and backing. It even has the original label with the Title, artist, artists address, and price. It reads: A Inverarnan Glen Falloch Robert Frier 62 Queen Street Edinburgh Price L30.00 (pounds) Brief Biography of Robert Frier: He was born in Edinburgh in 1855.[1] His father also Robert was a draper with a shop on the Lawnmarket in the Old Town and living at Ratcliffe Terrace in the South Side.[2] As there is a Robert Frier exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1853 this may indicate that his father also had artistic talent. His older brother Henry (Harry) Frier (1849-1921) was also an artist.[3]In 1880 he was living in a flat at 62 Queen Street, Edinburgh.[4]By 1890 he is living in a much larger house at 108 George Street and is listed as a "landscape artist and teacher of drawing and painting".[5]By 1895 he has left Edinburgh, possibly to live with his brother Henry in London.Source: Wikipedia Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
