This is a beautiful and unique Russian Shell Paper and papier mache trinket/jewellery box portraying famous painting by William Adolphe Bouguereau "The abduction of Psyche", hand painted. The box is signed with the artists name GUSYEVA (in russian letters). The box measures 12.2 cm (4 13/16 inches) long, 10.2 cm (4 inches) wide, 1.8 cm deep. This is a fabulous oil painted picture and the photo doesn't do it justice. I also have more Boxes from this artist in my shop. Cupid and Psyche Envious and jealous of the beauty of a mortal woman, Venus asks her son Cupid to make her fall in love with the vilest creature on earth. Cupid agrees, but when he sees her he falls in love, as he leans over from a distance to kiss her, one of his arrows falls forward and pierces him. As everyone continues to admire Psyche, her parents consult the oracle, which tells them to leave her on the nearest mountain, for her beauty is far too great for man. Her parents are terrified, but have no choice but to obey the oracle. But then Zephyrus the west wind carries Psyche to a fair valley into a beautiful palace, where she is attended by invisible servants until night fall. In the darkness of the night the promised bridegroom arrives and the marriage is consummated. Cupid visits her every night and makes love to her, but demands she doesn't turn on the light of any lamp because he doesn't want her to know who he is. Cupid allows Zephyrus to take Psyche to her sisters and take them all to the palace, but tells Psyche not to try and discover who he is. Her jealous sisters tell Psyche who is pregnant with Cupid's child, the rumor that she is wed to a great and terrible serpent that will kill them both as soon as the baby is born. They persuade her to kill him whilst he is asleep. That night she took a knife and an oil lamp and hid it in the bedchamber till Cupid fell asleep. As Psyche was about to kill Cupid she recognizes him in the small light, but she accidentally pricks herself with an arrow and is filled with desire for her husband, as she leans over to give him a kiss a drop of oil falls on his chest which wakes Cupid and he flies away leaving Psyche sick at heart. Psyche has to go and plead with Venus for her to tell her where Cupid is, Venus tries her very hardest that Psyche doesn't find Cupid, but Cupid finds Psyche and they are then wed properly.Jupiter then gives Psyche a drink made form Ambrosia, granting her immortality. They give birth to a daughter who they call Volaptas the goddess of "Sensual Pleasures." William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French: [buɡ(ə)ʁo], or roughly BOO (guh) ROW) November 30, 1825 – August 19, 1905, was a French academic painter and traditionalist. In his realistic genre paintings he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body. During his life he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work. As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he was reviled by the Impressionistavant-garde. By the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art fell out of favor with the public, due in part to changing tastes. In the 1980s, a revival of interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. Throughout the course of his life, Bouguereau executed 822 known finished paintings, although the whereabouts of many are still unknownWilliam-Adolphe Bouguereau was born in La Rochelle, France, on November 30, 1825, into a family of wine and olive oil merchants. He seemed destined to join the family business but for the intervention of his uncle Eugène, a Roman Catholic priest, who taught him classical and Biblical subjects, and arranged for Bouguereau to go to high school. He showed artistic talent early on. His father was convinced by a client to send him to the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, where he won first prize in figure painting for a depiction of Saint Roch. To earn extra money, he designed labels for jams and preserves.Through his uncle, Bouguereau was given a commission to paint portraits of parishioners, and when his aunt matched the sum he earned, Bouguereau went to Paris and became a student at the École des Beaux-Arts. His reward was a year at the Villa Medici in Rome, Italy, where in addition to formal lessons he was able to study first-hand the Renaissance artists and their masterpieces, as well as Greek, Etruscan, and Roman antiquities. He also studied classical literature, which influenced his subject choice for the rest of his career.Bouguereau, painting within the traditional academic style, exhibited at the annual exhibitions of the Paris Salon for his entire working life. An early reviewer stated, "M. Bouguereau has a natural instinct and knowledge of contour. The eurythmie of the human body preoccupies him, and in recalling the happy results which, in this genre, the ancients and the artists of the sixteenth century arrived at, one can only congratulate M. Bouguereau in attempting to follow in their footsteps ... Raphael was inspired by the ancients ... and no one accused him of not being original."Raphael was a favorite of Bouguereau and he took this review as a high compliment. He had fulfilled one of the requirements of the Prix de Rome by completing an old-master copy of Raphael’s The Triumph of Galatea. In many of his works, he followed the same classical approach to composition, form, and subject matter. Bouguereau's graceful portraits of women were considered very charming, partly because he could beautify a sitter while also retaining her likeness.In 1856, he married Marie-Nelly Monchablon and subsequently had five children. By the late 1850s, he had made strong connections with art dealers, particularly Paul Durand-Ruel (later the champion of the Impressionists), who helped clients buy paintings from artists who exhibited at the Salons. Thanks to Paul Durand-Ruel, Bouguereau met Hugues Merle, who later often was compared to Bouguereau. The Salons annually drew over 300,000 people, providing valuable exposure to exhibited artists. Bouguereau’s fame extended to England by the 1860s, and he bought a large house and studio in Montparnasse with his growing income.Bouguereau was a staunch traditionalist whose genre paintings and mythological themes were modern interpretations of Classical subjects, both pagan and Christian, with a concentration on the naked female human body. The idealized world of his paintings brought to life goddesses, nymphs, bathers, shepherdesses, and madonnas in a way that appealed to wealthy art patrons of the era.
