She debuted in New York at Tony Pastor's Theater on October 25, 1903. She became a headliner in vaudeville with one popular sketch portraying an athletic girl at a baseball game. She made this sketch into an cylinder recording for Edison in 1909. This was her only recording. ********************************************* Taylor Holmes (May 16, 1878 – September 30, 1959) was an actor who appeared in over 100 Broadway plays in his five-decade career. However, he is probably best remembered for his screen performances, which he began in silent films in 1917. Among his earliest starring roles is in George K. Spoor's 1918 production A Pair of Sixes. In 1915, he recorded 2 sides for Victor. Both are included in the CD release. ********************************************* Frank Tinney (1878-1940) He was a vaudeville and Broadway comedian. His shtick was to tell the corniest of jokes, implicating others (bandleaders, fellow performers and audience members) in the crime by dragging them onstage and making them the feeder. To make it more bizarre, he did this act in blackface** (without accent) for most of his career. His career ended in the 1920s after a scandal, else there might have been a cinematic record and he’d be better known today. ******************************************** The Kaufman Brothers known for their hundreds of records in the teens and twenties were also vaudeville headliners. The first Kaufman Brothers vaudeville team was Jack and Phil Kaufman. When Phil passed away, in the late teens, Irving joined the act. The two sides for Edison feature Irving and Jack Kaufman in 2 funny vaudeville routines. ******************************************** Rhoda Bernard She was popular in teens and sang with a Yiddish dialect. Her popularity never approached the popularity of Fannie Brice. Her 2 most popular records are included in this CD release. Also included are several other popular vaudeville performers from this period.
