A diagnostic test is similar but checks the stack and zero page more quickly, performs more extensive RAM tests, and tests the ROMs. To pass a diagnostic test, a Basic Kernel and character ROM is required. However, a diagnostic test can be used with a diagnostic harness consisting of numerous dongles that will also test the hardware ports of your Commodore machine. In short: a dead test has more chance in starting up and indicating a bad fault but a diagnostic test is more thorough and can be extended with a testing harness.
