Description: Costner Yellowstone Montana Wellington Jeannette Suffrage Rankin Galt 17 Ranch Zionist ... three letters, a photo a brother, a sister land - money - politics guns 'n lawyers et. al. Estate of professor of Political Science collection I've only antenna TV recent broadcast series of Yellowstone, which primed recall of this interesting set-aside lot of ephemera collection. Scanning online, after another perusal through the lot, it struck me as minimally ironic to what I had in hand similarly mirrored to the TV series. Powerful strong individuals, generational family and commanding properties. I'd recently sought a possible origin idea stimuli for the Montana series by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson though I found no mention of what may've stimulated either of them in way of a story idea... .... take him to the train station . HERE - Costner YELLOWSTONE Wellington Jeannette RANKIN Suffrage Galt MONTANA 71 RANCH A collection of political and personal communications of the Rankin family of Montana. Particularly brother Wellington and sister Jeanette. All three Letters, and Zionist Photo are Sharper and Clearer in-hand than here. (1) June 5, 1934 Letter to Wellington Rankin from Sam W. Mitchell MT Sec. of State on official Montana Secretary of State - Helena letterhead stationery. Acknowleding receipt of nominating Rankin's petition for office of U.S. Senator filing of said petition, and cerification in due course for the ballot .... (2) November 19, 1940 Letter to Honorable Jeannette Rankin, Congresswoman Elect, Missoula, MT from Edmund I. Kaufmann, President Zionist Organization of America, on official Washington, D.C., Zionist Organization of America letterhead Congratulations, Good wishes, confidences in her abilities, et. al., upon her recent election to congress. (3) 8 x10" b&w Photo of Edmund Kaufmann (president Zionist Org. of America), likely submitted / rcvd. with above letter. (Judaica) (4) Letter To brother Wellington Rankin from sister Jeannette Rankin (signed). July 4, <19..?) Four pg. (single-sided 8 pgs.) personal Letter on Leggat Hotel (Butte, MT) stationery, Unique brass "riveted" bound corner (the Leggat was the high-end hotel in it's day ... notated on top of first cover page "Deer Lodge" in red pencil and "July 4" I note here, I've read many times of Wellington's support for sister Jeannette in her many efforts, including her successful run for Congress. This letter from Jeannette makes it clear, to me, that she also extended efforts for Wellington's election/s, including this drive around the southwest of Montana (Helena, Butte, Anaconda, etc.) meeting and making contacts with multiple politicians (named) for his benefit. "Dear Wellington -- Things look good for you in Anaconda Saw Charles Avery .... Agness McDoual (sp?) her father talked to Herald Blake Mr Donald McLeod took me to see ... Called on a number of republicans but could not get much idea of what they thot -- Mr. H. Rogers is working for you ... et. al. Mentions of places and people, politics, mention of awareness of one of Wellington's "cases", outlooks on successful politics, supporters, etc. etc. et. al. Jeannette P. Rankin (1880 - 1973) GOP - Republican Suffragist, Congresswoman, Pacifist Montanan Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to Congress (1916), elected again in 1940. She was the lonely dissenter, committed to following the dictates of her conscience no matter the consequences. Jeannette Rankin, an early leader for woman suffrage and the first woman elected to Congress, crusaded for peace her entire life. “Killing more people won't help matters,” she said..... A borrowed photo herein shows her leading the anti-Vietnam Women's Peace parade in front of the Capitol Building in January 1968. "We're half the people, we should be half the Congress" "If I had my life to live over, I would do it all again, but this time I would be nastier" "As a woman I can't go to war and I refuse to send anyone else" "You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake" -- Jeannette Rankin "You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anybody" -- Maya Angelou . Wellington D. Rankin (1884 - 1966) GOP - Republican The entire U.S. and Montana's largest land owner, (At one time, over a million acres) Attorney General, Supreme Court justice. Wellington Rankin ruled over a staggering huge land and legal empire. He was one of the most influential attorneys in Montana. He also was the state’s largest landowner, owning vast cattle ranches that stretched to the horizon on the state’s central plains. He was Montana’s attorney general, a state Supreme Court justice, and architect of his sister Jeannette’s two pioneering elections to Congress. . Siblings Wellington D. Galt Family – 71 ranch, 248,023 acres (formerly Rankin) These holdings date back to mid-1900s, when Wellington Rankin was Montana’s largest private land owner, with over 1 million deeded and leased acres of property and 27,000 cows at the peak of his operation. Wellington was married to Louise Rankin, who inherited the estate after Wellington died in 1966. A year later, widow Rankin married Jack Galt, a notable ranch manager at the time.
