Description: Crazy Creek by Evelyn Sibley Lampman. Illustrated by Grace Paull. Doubleday & Company, Inc. 1948. 213-page hardcover with dust jacket, stated first edition, four full-page illustrations and more than two dozen smaller illustrations. Lampman, an Oregon native descended from an Oregon Trail emigrant, published 37 children's books in her 36-year career. Crazy Creek was her first. Like many of her books, she wrote it by drawing from her pioneer history and knowledge of Western Oregon. From the dust jacket description of Crazy Creek: "Judy McCallum almost felt as though she knew her pioneer ancestors because - between naps - her grandpa used to tell her of his boyhood days in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. And so, when she rowed down the millrace into their times, many strange adventures lay in store for all the McCallums. Judy had heard her grandpa tell about Indians but still, she was not prepared to meet one face-to-face in the woods. The family just shook their heads when Judy talked of airplanes and radios or told them of things which would happen to them or to their descendants. But when Judy won the spelling bee, Will admitted that he didn't know she was so smart, Mary Jane admired her for being brave and speaking up loudly, and Andy said condescendingly that he knew all along that she was brave, braver than any girl he'd ever seen, and pretty smart for one, too." Overall, good condition. The book itself is very good: solid, square binding; interior is clean, with no damage, writing, odor or discoloration except for a small dark spot at bottom left corner of last free endpaper; black illustration on front and lettering on spine are clear and sharp; minor bumps and wear at corners; a bit of edge wear; parts of boards faded near bottoms (perhaps due to moisture, although there is no evidence of this anywhere else). The unclipped dust jacket (price $2.50) is present but in poor condition: many chips and tears; numerous gray scuffs/marks of discoloration on front and back. A scarce first edition, especially with its dust jacket.
