Description: John Steinbeck, East of Eden. (New York: Viking. 1952.) First edition, second state. Cf. Homes and Holmes and Philip W. Rauls, along with Goldstone & Payne A32.b note: The reverse of the title page states only "Copyright by John Steinbeck" with "Printed in the United States" stated at bottom. There is one first-issue point: "bite" instead of "bight" on line 38 of page 281. The dust jacket is certainly a second state, with reviewer blurbs on back panel and flap; the price on the front flap is $4.50 with an asterisk to its left. And yet ... the book's spine does not have the brick red shading inside the title block, typical of most second states. This appears to be a variant binding, though it is NOT the Sears Readers Club edition. Enclosed in mylar. The book is in Very Good condition, with some light shelf wear, rubbing to edges, and very slight losses at tips and spine extremities. The DJ has a couple of tears and chips (one a triangular shape, approx. 3/8" x 1/2" at spine foot; the other a 1/8" x 1/4" at the top edge of front panel). The front panel remains quite vivd, but the spine is slightly sun darkened. An interesting variant. Compare with similar copies on ViaLibri.net, retailing to $400 PRIORITY MAIL strongly recommended.
