Description: Founded in 1933 by John Andrew Rice, Theodore Driver, et al. and located in a lakeside retreat fifteen miles east of Asheville, Black Mountain College was one of the most innovative and influential learning communities in the United States and an important incubator of the American avant-garde. Its faculty and lecturers included many of America's leading visual artists, composers, poets, and designers. Free from conventional academic apparatus, its students were trained to creatively participate in society. The school was the signifiant precursor to and prototype for many of today's alternative colleges. Regrettably, funding issues forced its closing in 1957.
