Description: victoria heilshorn studio - the best in History Title - Peering into the Heart of the Crab Nebula Description - In the year 1054 A.D., Chinese astronomers were startled by the appearance of a new star, so bright that it was visible in broad daylight for several weeks. Today, the Crab Nebula is visible at the site of the "Guest Star." Located about 6,500 light-years from Earth, the Crab Nebula is the remnant of a star that began its life with about 10 times the mass of our own Sun. Its life ended on July 4, 1054 when it exploded as a supernova. In this image, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has zoomed in on the center of the Crab to reveal its structure with unprecedented detail. The Crab Nebula data were obtained by Hubble's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 in 1995. Images taken with five different color filters have been combined to construct this new false-color picture. Resembling an abstract painting by Jackson Pollack, the image shows ragged shards of gas that are expanding away from the explosion site at over 3 million miles per hour. The core of the star has survived the explosion as a pulsar, visible in the Hubble image as the lower of the two moderately bright stars to the upper left of center. The pulsar is a neutron star that spins on its axis 30 times a second. It heats its surroundings, creating the ghostly diffuse bluish-green glowing gas cloud in its vicinity, including a blue arc just to its right. The colorful network of filaments is the material from the outer layers of the star that was expelled during the explosion. The picture is somewhat deceptive in that the filaments appear to be close to the pulsar. In reality, the yellowish green filaments toward the bottom of the image are closer to us, and approaching at some 300 miles per second. The orange and pink filaments toward the top of the picture include material behind the pulsar, rushing away from us at similar speeds. The various colors in the picture arise from different chemical elements in the expanding gas, including hydrogen (orange), nitrogen (red), sulfur (pink), and oxygen (green). The shades of color represent variations in the temperature and density of the gas, as well as changes in the elemental composition. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) How are your photographs processed? We pride ourselves on bringing you only the finest quality prints by consistently taking advantage of the ever-growing advances in photo technology. One of the ways we achieve this is with giclee, a high resolution, high-fidelity process using a performance-specialized large format printer. Giclee (pronounced zee-CLAY) utilizes inkjet technology, but far more advanced than a standard deskjet. Among other advantages, giclee employs an ulta-wide color gamut using 11 (or more) specified inks. Originally developed as a proofing system for the traditional lithograph, the superior quality and brilliance of the giclee was soon realized. Also, giclees are produced digitally, saving generations of the detail-robbing experienced with older methods such as negatives and plates. This is why giclee, dye sublimation and similar processes have become the gold standard of photographic production in the 21st century, and are employed by the majority of today's reputible photograpic and printhouse developers. How do I know your image description is accurate? We strive to make our photo descriptions as accurate as possible. Descriptions are taken directly from the U.S. Library of Congress, National Archives, or other sources as noted. In many cases, these institutions hold the original negatives and state the ascribed notes directly from the original photographer. Therefore, we use these institutions as our standard of authority on description accuracy. We are not responsible for errors and we will not participate in disputes. Should you have a dispute, please contact the sighted source directly. This listing images provide buyers the opportunity to assess the accuracy of the photo description before finalizing a purchase. As such, we don't accept returns on the basis of an allegedly inaccurate description. We encourage you to feel confident in the stated description before ordering. When can I expect my package? Items are shipped via USPS First Class mail (2-5 business days). Our items are made especially for you at the time you place your order, so please allow 1 day for processing (2 for larger orders). Your package should not be considered untimely unless it has not been received after one full week from your payment date (within the United States). Please consider weekends and holidays when anticipating your package arrival date as well. Is your transit packaging secure? Great care will be taken to ensure that your item arrives in excellent condition. Prints are shipped flat on cardboard and sealed in a water-resistant envelope or, for 11x14 prints and larger, rolled in a crush-resistant tube. Please note that we pay extra to have orders over $6.00 delivered as PACKAGES, not regular mail. This means your carrier should deliver your package to your doorstep (not bent or crammed it into your mailbox). Should you find your package damaged due to this type of handling, please inform your local postmaster. What is your return policy? We will happily exchange any defective or problematic merchandise. However, cash refunds are not allowed, as each item is made-to-order especially for you. Therefore, please be confident of purchase before placing your order. We ask that you contact us with any issues before leaving negative feedback, as we are committed to your 100% satisfaction and feel any problem can be easily resolved.
