Description: Constans I | AE4 Reference: RIC VIII 59 Date: 347-348 CE Obverse: DN CONSTANS P F AVG: Head of Constans, pearl-diademed, right Reverse: VOT/XX/MVLT/XXX within a wreath. SMNB• Mint: Nicomedia Size: 14.2 mm Weight: 1.04 grams VOTA coinage is an interesting subtype of the imperial series. Roman emperors took vows (VOTA) promising to do something for the gods if the gods did something the emperor wanted. Understandably, the emperor wanted a long reign, and so these vows were usually taken every five or ten years. The reverse of this coin reads "Having redeemed my vows to rule well for a period of 20 years, I extend the vows to a period of 30 years." This information also (usually) provides useful dating information on when the coin was produced. A really nice coin with attractive patination. This coin was actually struck for Constans by his brother Constantius II. This highlights the principle of "One empire, one law, multiple emperors".
