Esteban Paluzie (Barcelona: Litografía de Faustino Paluzie, 1882), measuring 6 by 4.5 inches, taken from the Captain’s room of the Spanish cargo ship Rita following its capture by the USS Yale on May 8, 1898. VOLUME TAKEN FROM THE CAPTURED SPANISH CARGO SHIP RITA AND ACCOMPANIED WITH PROVENANCE HANDWRITTEN AND SIGNED BY GENERAL JOHN BIDDLE Provenance handwritten and signed by General John Biddle (1859-1936) on the front free endpaper: “Taken from Captain’s room on Spanish Steamer ‘Rita,’ which was captured by U.S. Cruiser ‘Yale.’ Presented to Miss Mary F. Demoville by Lt. Col. John Biddle, U.S. Army - Oct. 24th, 1898.” Biddle later served as superintendent of the United States Military Academy and US Army Chief of Staff during World War I.
