DESCRIPTION: As far as we know, we are the only mineral dealers to offer these fantastic Arizona Rainbow Petrified Wood freeforms as we have had a very few especially made for us . The listing is for a magnificent and colourful petrified wood fully polished, standing freeform. It originates from the Arizona Chinle Formation, USA. It dates from the Triassic period, 220 million years old and is a large section of an Araucaria tree (an ancient conifer). The pastel red, orange, brown, cream and grey combine with the ancient wood grain to make a stunning display piece! It has one of the most unique colour patterns and best shapes you'll find from this incredible petrified forest! The colour in this magnificent specimen simply has to be seen in person to be truly appreciated - it looks as if the patterns were created by a tie dye artist! It clearly shows where Arizona "rainbow" wood gets its fanciful name! The amazing freeform is very nicely agatised and has a magnificent polish to bring all of that amazing colour to life as only the best grades of petrified wood can. This specimen displays equally well in any orientation, with different patterns all the way round. The whole freeform has been polished to a mirror finish over the whole surface.. just fantastic! We have included a 1cm square yellow cube, along with some grapes, in the photographs to give you an idea of how large this fabulous item is. A LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT PETRIFIED WOOD: Petrified wood is a fossil. It forms when plant material is buried by sediment and protected from decay due to oxygen and organisms. Then, groundwater rich in dissolved solids flows through the sediment, replacing the original plant material with silica, calcite, pyrite, or another inorganic material such as opal. The result is a fossil of the original woody material that often exhibits preserved details of the bark, wood, and cellular structures. Some specimens of petrified wood are such accurate preservations that people do not realise they are fossils until they pick them up and are shocked by their weight. These specimens with near-perfect preservation are unusual; however, specimens that exhibit clearly recognisable bark and woody structures are very common.
