Description: Musicians who used the Gibson S1 model guitar: Carlos Santana, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, Angel Olsen This vintage 1978 Gibson S1 electric guitar *MADE IN AMERICA* is a true gem for any guitar enthusiast. This guitar is unmodified - not even the wood finish has been redone! Made in the United States in 1978, it has the original beautiful natural wood finish body color and solid body type. The brand Gibson speaks for itself when it comes to quality and this S1 model is no exception. The guitar falls into the categories of electric guitars, guitars & basses, and musical instruments & gear. It's part of the S1 series and is a type of electric guitar. Whether you're a collector or a musician, this Gibson S1 will make a great addition to your collection or musical arsenal. I purchased this guitar in 1997 and have owned it ever since. It is always stored in its case, and kept in my climate controlled house so it has not been subjected to heat or humidity. The strings sit nice & low along the fretboard so it's SUPER easy to play. This guitar has been loved, appreciated and cared for, but is ready for its next home. The hard case shown in photos is included with the purchase. I plugged it in & played it today to confirm that it is in working order. The serial number indicates that it was produced by Gibson on September 5, 1978, and was the 31st instrument stamped that day. ------------------------------------------------ The body of the S-1 was broadly similar to a previous Gibson model, the Marauder. It was made of a solid Les Paul Jr-like body with a maple Flying V neck bolted on. It was adorned with Schaller made "Harmonica" style tune-o-matic bridge and the standard Gibson stopbar tailpiece. However, the S-1 was unique in its elaborate electronics and wiring. It featured three "see-thru" single-coil pickups designed by Bill Lawrence, which could be used together to generate humbucking sounds. The pickups were controlled by a combination of a toggle switch and a "chicken head" rotary switch. The rotary switch had four positions which allowed different selections of pickup combinations: 1) neck + middle, 2), middle + bridge 3) all three together, and 4) neck and bridge out of phase. The toggle switch bypassed the entire 4 position rotary switch circuit and made one straight connection to the bridge pick-up.Because of its unusual pickups and unique wiring scheme, the instrument was capable of a wide range of distinctive sounds. When interviewed about her 1979 S-1 with Ebony finish, Angel Olsen commented that "it has all these tones to it. If I wanted to make it super bright, I could do that for certain songsā¦ I just love my guitar"[2]
